| ART
The visual arts program includes an exploratory and creative process. The early grades use materials and processes such as cutting, drawing, painting and molding to develop fine motor skills and to provide a basic foundation of art knowledge on which to build in later grades. In the upper grades, the processes include drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture. Lessons are designed and sequenced to continually expand on the students' previous art knowledge and experiences/ skills. By the fifth grade, students will have an extensive understanding of the materials and their appropriate uses.
In our art studio, students will be introduced to the art from different cultures and the works of many artists. They will have an opportunity for hands on experiences that will allow them to appreciate, think, explore and create
PTA Sponsored Enrichment Programs
| CHESS
Students in grades K-5 work with Chess Master, Mr. Anatoly Tonkonogy. Chess instruction is provided every Friday for a 10-week cycle. Select students are also asked to participate in Chess Club once a week during their lunch period and the PS 110 Annual Chess Tournament.
| NATIONAL DANCE INSTITUTE (NDI)
This program introduces second & fourth grade students to the fundamentals of dance while challenging them creatively and intellectually. The NDI teaching team, comprised of two Teacher/Choreographers and a Musician/Composer, explores how movement and music become dance.
Throughout the year, students explore a curricular theme, which becomes the basis for the end-of-year theatrical performance.
History comes to life in the classroom as students explore the New York Historical Society's collections in our interactive classroom programs. Using authentic touch objects and primary images, maps and documents, students experience hands-on history and deepen their understanding of New York’s and America’s past in the classroom. Their inquiry-driven programs expand vocabulary and develop critical thinking skills.
The program is led by a New York Historical Society educator or teaching artist. The work they do supports the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies and New York State Learning Standards for Social Studies and the Arts. They work with our fourth grade students.
| NYU TEACHERS & WRITERS COLLABORATIVE
This program offers students in fourth and fifth grades school-based writing programs led by professional writers. T&W helps students develop creative and imaginative skills, increased motivation and skills in reading, and an improved ability to express their experiences and ideas in writing.
During a T&W writing residency, students think of themselves as writers. And at the end of most T&W programs, students work with the writer to revise their work, which T&W publishes in an anthology.
Our kindergarten and first grade students explore movement and dance under the guidance of a Paul Taylor dancer. Through the practice of dancing and choreography, they discover new ways to express themselves physically, emotionally and cognitively. As they learn to organize movement in time and space, students explore the basic elements of dance while cultivating their unique expression.
| THEATER FOR A NEW AUDIENCE
Theater for a New Audience offers fifth grade students the opportunity to learn about classical Shakespeare plays that they study and interpret. The end of the 10-week course culminates with a performance of the play they studied.
| THIRD STREET MUSIC SETTLEMENT
Partnered with our school, our Pre-K through fifth grade students explore Orff-based music and movement while fourth and fifth grade students participate in chorus or world percussion. The classes are led by teaching artists from Third Street Music Settlement.
| TAKE 2 FILM
Since 2009, Take Two Film Academy has taught filmmaking and literacy programs in over three dozen private, public and charter schools from New York to Boston. More than 2,000 students of all economic backgrounds K-12 have participated in one of Take Two's programs. Works have been featured in the Tribeca Film Festival, Downtown Youth, and the SONYC Youth Film Festival.
Our third grade students learn every aspect of filmmaking, including research, screenwriting, technical camerawork, performance in front of a camera, direction and video editing. Through this work, students gain the technical and creative competencies needed to transform their ideas into fully realized works.
